The Maldives famously offers a dream experience to both gay and straight honeymooners. In return, those honeymooners spend happily and fund the government's terror against its own gay population. If a gay man is caught being in a same-sex relationship, the Judge inflicts savage sentences of up to eight years in prison. If that's not enough, the victim can also receive 100 lashes under Sharia law. Local police run targeted entrapment operations on dating apps. Foreigners - depending on their passport 'weight' - will probably only suffer deportation (if anything at all) if they are mixing it with the locals. If a foreign worker or expat tests positive for HIV, exile and deportation are the most likely punishment. Of course, tourists are never subject to tests.
A short stay in a Maldivian private resort is super safe and friendly for honeymooners and couples. It's a dream! They have a lovely time with blissful ignorance that they are directly funding a terror regime that hates not only them, but also whips and imprisons gay people. But don't worry - the UN is aware of the situation and sending - help?
In 2024, the UN wrote the Maldives a letter saying that the terrorist regime really should "decriminalise same-sex sexual activity; investigate and prosecute all crimes committed against people on the basis of their sexual orientation." Two years earlier, the Maldives considered capital punishment for people “who practice homosexuality”, although that law didn't pass.

Urgent (PEP): If you think you have been exposed to HIV, you must start PEP within 72 hours. Public state facilities present an extreme legal and deportation risk for gay men; immediately seek care at a private emergency room in the capital.
The Maldives has a developing medical infrastructure. In major cities, gay men can access limited private care. In rural areas, access is non-existent. Confidentiality is at risk, and patients should not disclose their orientation to state doctors.
If you are living in a country where it is impossible to get care and you're panicking about HIV right now, stop, look at this screen. This screen is here for you. There is a lot of outdated opinions about HIV out there, but these are just homophobic rubbish. Take a slow, deep breath. You have time. You are going to be okay and we are with you. HIV is a completely manageable medical condition. With modern medication, you will live a long, healthy, and happy life. But you must avoid stress, it is your absolute worst enemy right now - It will make you weak. I know that's easy to say, but just try following the breathing exercises below. They really work. Protect yourself: rest, eat a meal, listen to music, and do whatever you must to quiet your mind - Force a smile, and within a minute you will start to feel better. I know, but it works. Do it.
If you are trapped in a hostile country and local state doctors are not safe for you, your priority is to move yourself to a safe environment. I know that's not easy, you might think it's impossible, but you are not alone. International organizations exist solely to help gay people like you to escape dangerous regimes. They can really help you and you can get your life-saving healthcare. Take a deep breath. You have time but you must take action as soon as possible.
Go private or fly out immediately. If you need urgent medical care for anything that might expose your sexuality, your only choice is to evacuate or go private. Click the blue text above if you are local.

"Same-sex relations are illegal under Maldivian law and penalties include imprisonment and fines."

The Maldives is a place of love and terror. The terrorist state pockets millions from gay travelers protected inside insulated private island resorts. Step outside that resort and the law turns medieval. On local inhabited islands and inside the capital city of Malé, visible affection will trigger immediate hostility, violence and/or arrest. The terrorists humiliate, fine, jail, whip - 100 lashes which could be deadly - and social extinction.
Private overwater villas and ultra-luxury international resorts function as completely autonomous bubbles where couples can relax safely away from the local Islamic terrorism. Sounds marvelous.
Visiting inhabited local islands, booking guesthouses outside private resorts, or using dating apps anywhere near Malé exposes you to local vigilante groups and state entrapment setups.
Do not go. Tell anyone thinking of going that they are supporting a state that terrorizes and tortures its local gay population. Spread the word and hit the regime in the pocket. Only then might they change their laws.
There is no freedom here for any LGBT person unless you are a tourist. On the ground, it's very dangerous.
Nomadic Boys Usually a great supporter of you but you are literally supporting the terrorist regime's attack on the local gay community. I support your visit, but don't brush over the locals' problems with a few sentences. Put it to the front of the story and expose the terror. We know why you are supporting gay businesses. Forget the money on this one and use your experience to campaign against tourism there - especially the honeymooners you are clearly trying to sell to. As soon as this regime starts losing dollars, they will relax their laws. Guaranteed. After that, get your commission! Or you could just take your dedicated page down for the Maldives, you know, like you did with Israel. May 20 2026.

Sharia law dictates local statutes, meaning your love life is an indictable offense outside of insulated luxury resort enclaves. Step onto local inhabited islands or explore Malé, and you face a conservative police state that enforces public flogging and multi-year prison sentences.
